Founded in the nineteenth century, United Biscuits supplies British wholesalers and supermarket chains with over 100 million cases of snacks each year, a service made possible by the more than three hundred workers operating in the distribution hub at any given time. Despite having created an in-house safety programme, consistent safety was proving a challenge over a three-shift pattern, and surveys revealed discontent among the workforce as well as rising incident rates.
SafeStart at United Biscuits
Implemented in 2009, SafeStart trained every employee – whether managerial or shop floor-based – with a view to reframing the issue. This renewed approach to safety awareness led to injuries falling by 80 percent.
