Occupational safety will depend on human error management

Many companies are up to date when it comes to traditional safety measures as well as behaviour-based programmes. Despite all their efforts, however, every workplace tends to have some remaining issues in terms of safety. This holds true for every branch and industry: There always seems to be something that is missing.

As it turns out, more than 90 percent of all injuries and accidents at work occur due to unintentional errors, caused by at least one of four emotional or physical states:

  • Rushing
  • Frustration
  • Fatigue
  • Complacency.

These include recurring injuries and causes of accidents such as slips, trips and falls, sprains and strains and so on as well as severe injuries and worse. Nevertheless, it is hard to pinpoint what is going wrong exactly or what it is that safety managers should focus on in particular.

While the automation of many jobs increases – especially in the field of production and the like – the remaining human factors need to be scrutinised. Will they make more mistakes and unintentional errors, which ultimately impact company performance and employees’ safety, or will they make less? There is little reliable information on what is to come in this respect. But there is one thing we can consider a fact: Improving workplace safety and achieving the next level of safety management requires a lot more than traditional approaches focusing on compliance and BBS.
